DNA-1 is a lunar mare simulant created in Italy for testing 3D printing with regolith. It was developed to be a cost-effective alternative to JSC-1A and CAS-1. The simulant was made from natural volcanic material close to Bolsena Lake in Italy.
The name DNA is a play on words in Tuscan-Roman slang, and roughly translates to “we made it”. According to G. Cesaretti, the experiments are no longer operating and there appears to be no plan to further develop the simulant.
