Similar to the Oshima Simulant, Kohyama is also referred to as “Kohyama Base Simulant”, but this likely refers to the fact that it is “based” on the Kohyama gabbro. The simulant was developed by the Shimizu Corporation, along with Oshima and the FJS- series. Kohyama appears to be made entirely of gabbro, and is intermediate between highlands and mare in composition.

If the production methods for Kohyama were the same as the FJS- series, then the raw materials were progressively crushed finer until the desired particle size distribution was obtained. The amount of Kohyama produced, and its fate, are unclear.
