Sibille et al. (2006) describe a series of historical simulants produced during the Apollo program, simply called Lunar Soil Simulant (LSS). An expert group developed 5 such materials, LSS-1 through LSS-5. These were crushed basalts from Napa, California.

These simulants were not well documented and are no longer available, although a derivative called Napa Valley Basalt simulant (NVB) may still be around.
